Cheetah devours own cub in Jhargram zoo

Jhargram May 26 : A jungle cheetah has devoured its own newborn cub in Jhargram zoo, zoo authority said. Jhargram Zoo Superintendent Basabraj Holechchi along with a team of doctors confirmed this after conducting a thorough investigation and search in the area .

Harshini, a female cheetah, was brought here from Khayerbari Tea bustee in North Bengal in 2017 and allowed to share the same enclosure with a male cheetah Sohel. After Harshini became pregnant she was transferred to a separate enclosure. She delivered her baby on April 14 last, but started howling whenever any forest staff went near the enclosure. The baby had been found loitering happily with its mother for the first four days. From the fifth day it could not be traced.

Samir Majumdar,an expert on Animal Habits and an ex Additional Divisional Forest Officer, Jhargram, said feline type of animals often devour their babies if they find any physical deformities in them. (UNI)
