Kolkata, Jan 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday renamed the Kolkata Port Trust as Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port.
At the Sesquicentenary Celebration of Kolkata Port Trust at Netaji Indoor Stadium here, the Prime Minister said, “I announce the renaming of the Kolkata Port Trust to Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port. He is a living legend who was a leader for development and fought on the forefront for the idea of One Nation, One Constitution.”
“On this occasion, I would like to remember Babasaheb Ambedkar. Dr Mukherjee and Baba Saheb both brought new policies for post-independence India and gave a new vision,” he said.
Mr Modi said Dr Mukherjee had laid the foundation for industrialisation in the country. Both Dr Mukherjee and Babasaheb Ambedkar had given visions for post-independence India.”
However, it is unfortunate that after they resigned from the government, those visions were not implemented the way they should have been, the Prime Minister commented.
Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 which later went on to become today's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was expected to attend the function organised by the Kolkata Port Trust, skipped it. (UNI)
