Kolkata, Jan 11 : Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today participated in a demonstration being staged by the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Raj Bhavan.

Earlier, after meeting the Prime Minister, Ms Banerjee said she has told Mr Modi that the state was against the new citizenship Act. "We are against CAA and NRC and NPR. It should be ensured that no one leave the country. There should not be atrocities on anyone. The government should reconsider NRC and CAA,” she said.

"The Prime Minister said, 'I am here for other engagement, we can discuss the issue in Delhi,'" Ms Banerjee said. "I have told PM that people in Bengal are not accepting NRC and CAA. This was a courtesy call since he has come to West Bengal," the chief minister said. Earlier, amid severe protests by the Trinamool Congress and Left-wing students, Mr Modi arrived in the city to take part in 150th-anniversary celebrations of the Kolkata Port Trust.(UNI)
