Kolkata, Sep 08: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said the State Government schemes like " Aikyashree, Sikshashree, Kanyashree and Sabooj Sathi " have played an important role in decreasing dropout rates in schools.
Taking to her Twitter handle on the occasion of International Literacy Day, Ms Banerjee stated, " Today is #InternationalLiteracyDay. In #Bangla, school students are provided free books, uniforms, shoes, bags and test-papers. " " Our schemes like #Aikyashree, #Sikshashree, #Kanyashree and #SaboojSathi have played an important role in decreasing dropout rates in schools, " she noted.
September 8 was declared international literacy day by UNESCO on October 26 in 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO's General conference. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. (UNI)
