Lightning leaves 5 dead, 20 hurt in rain-battered Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 16: Five people were killed and nearly 20 injured in lightning strikes in rain-battered Bengal on Friday.

Three members of a family died and many were injured at Raghunathpur in Purulia district, police said.

In Kolkata a woman was killed at Regent Park area of Tollygunge in south Kolkata, while a man died and 15 others were wounded when struck by lightning at Victoria Memorial complex, police added.

Flight operations were disrupted at the Dum Dum airport, according to an airport official. Operations between 3 pm and 4 pm were severely affected owing to low visibility. Many flights were delayed, airport sources said.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has set up control rooms to oversee the situation as several areas were submerged. Many arterial roads were water-logged. Traffic went for a toss, badly inconveniencing people. Home bound commuters had a harrowing time as public transport was scarce.

A heavy rain alert triggered by a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh has been sounded in several districts of West Bengal for the next 48 hours.

According to the weather office heavy falls are expected in the Gangetic Bengal area owing to the cyclonic formation. (UNI)
