Kolkata, Jun 12 : Police had to lob teargas shells and charge water cannons to disperse thousands of agitating BJP activists, who marched towards the police headquarters of Lalbazar in the city on Wednesday to protest the complete 'breakdown' of law and order in the state.

Few women, who had sneaked into the police barricade and shouted slogan 'Jay Sri Ram' in front of Lalbazar main gate, were taken inside Lalbazar. The main march started from Wellington Square in Central Kolkata. The city life virtually came to a standstill as thousands of saffron brigade supporters and workers marched towards Lalbazar this noon in protest against the deteriorating law and order situation across the state.

BJP leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya, MP S S Aluwalia and others squatted on the junction of Central Avenue and B B Ganguly Street, leading to Lalbazar, as police charged water cannon and lob teargas shells to disperse the marchers. Police also used batons to disperse the rallyists when an iron barricade was overthrown. Police again erected the barricades. Many women rallyists also fell on the streets following pressure from water cannon. BJP leader Raju Banerjee was reportedly hurt when he was hit by a teargas shell.

The BJP supporters virtually lay siege the entire Central Avenue.BJP leader Jayprakash Mazumder said the state turned into a police state and said the end of Mamata Banerjee was very near as she was depending on the police force after people began to desert her TMC.

To prevent a repeat of such scenes, the Kolkata Police put in place tight security at all major crossings. The political slugfest between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress has increased in West Bengal post the Lok Sabha elections.

After Purulia, Naihati, Kankinara, Sandeshkhali and Uluberia, this time it's Malda as BJP worker Asit Singha, who has been missing since Sunday last, was today found murdered near his home in the district and his face was defaced with acid.
