Clashes between BJP workers and police in Kolkata

Agency News

Malda/Kolkata, June 12: Bloodshed continued dogging West Bengal unabated with no sign of any let-up as political killings have become almost a regular event in the state.

In a vehement protest march of the saffron brigade on Wednesday towards the police headquarters in Lalbazar in the city, party workers clashed with policemen who resorted to using batons and water cannons on hundreds of workers when they insisted on marching on despite repeated police appeals to stop.

The rally was in protest against the killing of two BJP workers at Bashirhat on Saturday and the deaths of many other workers in clashes over the last few weeks.

With the rally turning into a fresh showdown between the BJP and the Mamata Banerjee government, the police, since morning, had put elaborate arrangements in place to tackle the possibility of BJP workers breaking barricades.

The city life virtually came to a standstill as thousands of BJP supporters and workers marched towards Lalbazar which turned into a fortress with over 3,000 uniformed men and women, who have made walls around police headquarters.

Meanwhile, few women, who had sneaked into the police barricades and shouted slogan ''Jay Sri Ram' in front of Lalbazar main gate, were taken inside Lalbazar.
The march started from Wellington Square in Central Kolkata. (UNI)
