Asansol, Apr 14 : Moon Moon Sen, veteran actress and daughter of Bengali screen legend Suchitra Sen, a giant killer who pulled off a major upset in her poll debut in 2014 Lok Sabha election by defeating nine-time CPI (M) MP Basudeb Acharia in Bankura Lok Sabha constituency, will be challenging union minister and sitting BJP MP from Asansol Babul Supriyo this time.
Moon Moon triumphed by 97,511 votes over Mr Acharia, who had been winning from the seat without a break since 1980.
After Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee nominated Moon Moon Sen for Asansol constituency, her rival sitting MP Babul Supriyo in a tweet said, “Mamtaji always presents me with SEN-sational opponents in Asansol Elections… Dola SEN in 2014 and Moon Moon Sen in 2019 !”
Sen, an alumnus of Loreto Convent, Shillong and Loreto House, Kolkata, graduated from Oxford where her classmate was cricketing legend-turned-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.
She completed her Masters in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, and learned painting from Jamini Roy, considered one of India's greatest artists.
Moon Moon is known for her work in Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and Kannada films, besides staring in Bollywood films. Supriyo, on the other hand, is known for being a playback singer. Starting in the 1990s, Supriyo primarily sings in Bengali and Hindi.
Prior to coming to the movies, Moon Moon Sen got married to Rajkumar Bharatdev Verma of Tripura Raj Bharna. His mother-in-law Eila Devi was the princess of Tripura Cooch Bihar and she was the younger sister of Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur.
Moon Moon has two daughters Riya Sen and Raima Sen. Both of them have also worked in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya and Malayalam films.
Sen's entry into politics was unexpected and triggered by tragedy. When her mother, the legendary Bengali actor Suchitra Sen, passed away in January 2014.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to make inroads into the state to offset some of the losses it is expected to make in the ‘Hindi-heartland’. The move to field Moon Moon from Asansol is being seen as Ms Banerjee’s attempt to block the BJP juggernaut in the state.
When asked about her winning chances in Asansol constituency, Moon Moon said, “I am absolutely certain that Trinamool will win.
“There is a wave for Trinamool here, for development, for change," she said.
However, sources said sending Sen to contest in Asansol could also potentially serve the purpose of neutralising the existing factions within TMC in the area.
"There are at least four different factions in Asansol and they have all been contesting within themselves for supremacy. By sending an outsider, that too someone who is as much a celebrity as Babul Supriyo can neutralise this,” The source added,
Asansol, the industrial belt in West Bengal close to Jharkhand, saw Supriyo win in 2014 when he became one of the BJP’s two MPs from West Bengal in 2014 after he defeated Trinamool labour leader Dola Sen and CPI-M MP Bansa Gopal Chowdhury. (UNI)
