Kolkata, Apr 13 : Kumartuli is known as the womb of artistry in Kolkata as it has become an institution. But never ever in the history of Kolkata, there has been a celebration of their artistry. On the occasion of World Art Day and Poila Boisakh, a two-day carnival, named Rang Matir Panchali, will take place at the artisans' hub in Kolkata on April 14 and 15. Rang Matir Panchali is an initiative by Asian Paints Sharad Shamman. A first of its kind art carnival in Kumartuli will be brought to life by the artists from Kumartuli & beyond.
Kumartuli will be transformed into a new avatar, keeping its rustic character intact.
Exhibits will include idol-making, installations, painting, sculptures, photographs, wall graffiti, street art, etc. the modern is blending with the traditional one. Some installation will be in the open air while others will be displayed inside several studios.
An uneven patch of multiple colours will run from the gate along the ground, thus guiding the visitors along the exhibition trail.
About 30 artists of Kumortuli are involved in this initiative. Well known Durga puja theme maker Sushant Pal and Partha Dasgupta is part of the carnival as a mentor.
Among the other artists of Kumartuli are Nabokumar Pal, Subal Pal, Mintu Pal, Parimal Pal, female potter China Pala, Sushmita Rudra Pal and Mala Pal. The entire initiative is curated & managed by Creocraft, a Kolkata-based creative agency. (UNI)
