Glamour adorns political arena in the coming LS poll

Agency News

Kolkata, Mar 25 : Seasoned politicos have frowned upon their greenhorn counterparts, but a slew of celebrity candidates, particularly from the silver screen, contesting from West Bengal, rode on star power to their way to Parliament.

However, the Trinamool Congress' strategy to put up a host of stars from various fields paid rich dividends allowing it to register a thumping victory in 34 seats to nearly double its 2009 tally of 19.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee is banking on their glamour quotient to increase the party's tally by fielding a number of stars from Bengali film industry for the coming Lok Sabha election in the state.

Ms Banerjee aims to become the third biggest party in the Lok Sabha. She was confident the BJP would not come to power this time in the Lok Sabha polls in which her party TMC would emerge as the third largest party in the country. Just like earlier, in the coming Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress is again banking on its moviestar candidates to garner votes.

On the other hand, the BJP also nominated Locket Chatterjee, a Bengali actress-turned-politician from Hooghly constituency. Recently two yesteryear’s Bengali film stars - Biswajit Chatterjee and Mousumi Chatterjee -joined BJP in New Delhi in presence of BJP leader Mukul Roy and party observer in Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh made it clear that he does not have much interest in celebrity candidates and is more interested in fielding candidates who have a sound political background. However, BJP sources revealed that BJP leaders like Roy and Vijayvargiya are keen on celebrity candidates.

According to sources they are of the opinion that without celebrity candidates and new faces it will be extremely difficult to achieve the target of 23 seats in Bengal that was set by party president Amit Shah.

Veteran actor Moon Moon Sen, Shatabi Roy, Sandhya Roy, Tapas Paul and the Bengali film superstar Dev (Deepak Adhikari) were among Trinamool’s members in the 16th Lok Sabha.

The two new actors who join the fray this time are Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan. The two have replaced actors and incumbent MPs Tapas Paul and Sandhya Roy. Nusrat Jahan will contest from Basirhat and Mimi Chakraborty from Jadavpur, while Shatabdi Roy, Dev (Deepak Adhikari) and Moon Moon Sen will contest from Birbhum, Ghatal and Asansol respectively.

Veteran actor Moon Moon Sen will fight against union minister and sitting MP Babul Supriyo and CPI(M) candidate Gouranga Chatterjee from Asansol.this time. With credits in Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and Kannada films, Moon Moon Sen joined the Trinamool Congress in 2014.

Sen, the daughter of legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen and Dibanath Sen, the great grandson of the Diwan of Tripura, finished her graduation from Somerville College in Oxford and did her post-graduation from Jadavpur University. After making her cinematic debut in 1984, she began a second career in politics 30 years later. In 2014, she defeated CPI(M)’s nine-time MP Basudeb Acharia from Bankura. UNI
