Kolkata, Mar 10 : Ahead of announcement of the Lok Sabha polls by the ECI, the city police has seized Rs 87 lakh 50 thousand from a youth while he was carrying the wads of notes in a nap sack, and in separate raid cops from Lalbazar arrested two youths for possessing some fake 8 lakh of Indian currencies from this heart of the city.
Joint Commissioner of Police Praveen Tripathi on Sunday said the cops on a specific input had laid a trap at the crossings of JL Nehru Road and Sudder Street in New Market area on Saturday night and arrested Md Wasim Khan (30) while carrying the bundle of notes of Rs 87 lakh 50 thousand in a nap sack.
Khan, a resident of Taltala area of central part of the city could not immediately clarify the sources of huge cash and destination.
Police said the accused, who would be produced before the Bankshall Court in the city later today, could have been supplying the fund with ulterior motive ahead of of Parliamentary elections.
The Special Task Force of Kolkata Police in another raid arrested two youths identified as Dipal Montel and Jay Mandal, carrying Rs 8 lakh fake Indian currencies from busy Chandni Chowk market on Saturday afternoon, police said today.
The two youths, residents of Biasnabnagar of Malda district, were carrying the fake notes in the denomination of Rs 2000 (400 pieces).
Malda and Murshidabad districts closed to Bangladesh border are notorious for fake currencies trade. UNI
