Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short story writer who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. He wrote 17 plays and almost 600 stories. He completed his medical studies in 1884 and worked in a hospital in Chikino, Russia but by December was diagnosed with tuberculosis of which he eventually died on July 2, 1904. He wrote some of his stories under the pseudonym Antosha Chekhonte.

He famously said, ‘Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my mistress.’

Some of his most famous short stories are The Lady with the Dog, The Seagull and the Three Sisters. His stories were comic satire pointing out human folly and the unhappy nature of existence.
