Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright and novelist who was born into Russian nobility. He is considered the founder of modern Russian literature. He spoke 10 languages. He loved playing cards though was not particularly successful. He often got into debt and then hastily wrote all night to pay off his dues. He also had a penchant for duels and a fatal one ended his life at the age of 37.

He founded a literary journal “Sovrenennik” translated as “The Contemporary”. It was Pushkin who gave the idea to his good friend Nikolai Gogol for his famous work “Dead Souls”. Among Pushkin’s famous works are: The Queen of Spades, The Bronze Horseman, Eugene Onegin, The Captain’s Daughter, I Loved You and The Shot.
