Franz Kafka

Kafka was a German speaking Jewish novelist and short story writer, regarded as one of the major figures of 20th century literature. WH Auden called him ‘The Dante of the 20th century’. Kafka worked as an insurance officer, a job he did not enjoy as it left him little time for writing. However he did it only to pay the bills.

Kafka did not have a good relationship with his father as is evident from his Letter to his Father of more than 100 pages. In it he complains of his father’s authoritarian and demanding character. His mother in contrast was shy and quiet. The dominating figure of his father had a significant influence on his writings.

Some of Kafka’s best works are ‘The Metamorphosis’, ‘The Trial’, ‘The Judgment’ [which he wrote in one night], and ‘The Man Who Disappeared’.

The term ‘Kafkaesque’ is used to describe concepts and situations reminiscent of his work, particularly the Trial and The Metamorphosis. Examples include instances where bureaucracies overpower people, often in a surreal, nightmarish milieu which evokes feelings of senselessness, disorientation and helplessness. The term has today come to apply to real life situations and occurrences that are in comprehensibly complex, bizarre or illogical.
