Ludwig van Beethoven was a German music composer par excellence - one of the most significant and influential composers of the western art music tradition and a trained pianist and violinist. His father was an alcoholic and abused him for playing wrong notes.

He made his debut with the first symphony at the age of 29 in Vienna in April, 1800. In his early 30s Beethoven started losing his hearing and by 1819 was totally deaf but that did not keep him away from composing.

Beethoven never married or had children but was desperately in love with a married woman named Antonie Brentano.

Beethoven had the habit of dipping his head in cold water, often before he began composing. This has been attributed as one of the causes of his deafness.

He passed away in March, 1827 at the age of 56 of hepatitis cirrhosis.
