Queen Victoria [1819-1901]

One of history’s most iconic monarchs, Queen Victoria [1819-1901] ruled for more than 60 years. She was only 18 when she became queen.

She was a linguist and was fluent in English, German, French, Italian and Latin. During the course of her 21 year marriage to Prince Albert she raised 9 children. They had 42 grandchildren. The queen survived at least 6 assassination attempts.

On 14 December 1861, Prince Albert died of typhoid. The queen since then wore black and is said to have slept beside an image of Albert. She even had a set of clothes laid out for him each morning, right up till her own death in 1901.
