Lucknow, May 7 : After opening the liquor shops, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has lifted the ban on the manufacture and sale of 'paan masala' in the state from Wednesday night, an official said on Thursday. But the government continued the ban on sale of 'gutka' and tobacco.
The State Food Safety and Drug Administration department had issued the order of lifting the ban on pan Masala on late Wednesday night . The ban on the manufacture, storage and sale of tobacco and nicotine-free pan masala/gutkha in the state, imposed on the start of the Lock Down in the last week of March will continue, officials said. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had also allowed stationery and book shops to open in the green and orange zones, maintaining social distancing norms.
Liquor shops in the state were opened on Monday last attracting severe criticism by the politicians and others. However the government defended its decision and state finance minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said besides getting additional revenue during the financial crisis , the decision was taken to prevent people from consuming hooch.
