Lucknow ,Feb 9: After renaming Allahabad as Prayagraj and Faizabad as Ayodhya, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is likely to change the name of Basti district to Vashishth Nagar or Vishishthi.
The Basti district administration has sent a proposal to the state government in this regard on Saturday. A year back Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had renamed the Basti Medical College as Maharishi Vashisth Medical College, this led to the demand for renaming of the district after the Vedic sage.
A proposal in this regard was sent to the Board of Revenue two months back which sought some clarification from the Basti administration. Official sources said here on Sunday that the cost of renaming the district would be around Rs 1 crore.
BJP MP from Basti Harish Dwivedi and BJP MLA Ajay Kumar Singh have already written a letter to Yogi Adityanath demanding renaming of the district. One of the most revered Vedic Rishis, Vashishth finds a mention in many Hindu mythological stories, he is said to have possessed the divine cow Kamdhenu and her child Nandini.
Vashisthi is commonly believed to be the original name of Basti. (UNI)
