Police team attacked in Varanasi, 30 taken into custody

Varanasi, Oct 29 : A police team was attacked by a crowd of local people in the Jansa area of this district in Uttar Pradesh, police sources said on Tuesday.

As many as 30 people have been taken into custody and are being interrogated. According to sources, a team of the Crime Branch nabbed wanted criminals Rajan Bharadwaj and Rahul Bharadwaj after receiving information, in the Jansa area of the Hansons village on Monday night.

Meanwhile, numerous supporters of the two accused attacked the policemen after taking them hostage.

Upon receiving information, senior police officials from Rohniyan and other stations reached the spot. It has been alleged that the crowd attacked the cops with bricks and stones, injuring at least six policemen including P Tripathi.
It was also reported that after holding several policemen hostage, their pistols were taken away.

Sources said that the injured policemen are undergoing treatment at Banaras Hindu University's Trauma Center.

Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni took stock of the situation. (UNI)
