Phagwara, Oct 6 : Tension prevailed in the town ahead of the October 21 Assembly bypoll when Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) activists sat on dharna to protest the removal of 25 flex posters of party candidate Bhagwan Dass from the poles near Sugar Mills and Nakodar Road chowk by the staff of the Municipal Corporation on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Phagwara SP Manwinder Singh and SDM-cum-Returning Officer Latif Ahmed reached the spot to pacify the BSP protesters.
Punjab Police also took out a flag march in the city soon after the trouble arose. The flag march went through various areas of Phagwara. The aim of the march was to give the message that the police were committed to ensure a free, fair and peaceful by-poll in Phagwara.
BSP leaders, including state general secretary Makhan Singh and Parveen Banga, in a written complaint, alleged that despite formal sanction of 40 posts the Municipal Corporation employees tore up the election flex posters of BSP candidate in their presence.
Poll observer Saurav Bhagat said he was monitoring the situation.(UNI)
