Sonebhadra, Jul 17: Firing over land dispute in Uttar Pradesh took lives of nine villagers in Ghorawal area of the Sonbhadra district on Wednesday.
Among the deceased five were males. Also, around 20 people were injured, of which three are critical.
The firing was started by relatives of Pradhan, who went to take possession of the land amid opposition from villagers.
UP DGP OP Singh said the incident occurred in a remote area in Ghorawal police station area at Ubha village where a panchayat called "Murtiya" sits.
"The accused gram pradhan had purchased 90 bigha of land two years back.On Wednesday, he went with some of his associates to take possession of his property. But locals opposed. As a result, scuffle broke out, resulting in firing from the Pradhan's side.
Local police lead by SP Sonbhadra had reached the spot, as also DIG Mirzapur Punish Srivastava.
Singh said two nephews of the Pradhan had been arrested and search operation was underway to nab others.
Other reports say the clash happened between Gond and Gujjar communities and Pradhan was of the Gond community.
A large police contingent has been deployed in the village where the situation is tense but under control.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognisance of the incident and directed DM Sonbhadra to provide immediate medical attention to the injured. (UNI)
