Kanpur, Mar 13 : With one more person succumbing on Wednesday, the toll in the Kanpur hooch tragedy mounted to seven, sources here said.
While 12 persons have been admitted to the Hallet hospital, the critically injured have been shifted to Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS). The District Excise Officer has been suspended in this connection.
Notably, spurious liquor was being sold illegally at grocery shops in the Ghatampur area and several people had fallen ill earlier also after consuming it.
Four people had died on Monday and two others the next day while undergoing treatment in a local hospital.
According to sources, eight people allegedly involved in the spurious liquor case have been arrested and police is currently on a lookout for the ten absconding accused.
The district administration also suspended the District Excise Officer, Kanpur late Tuesday night. Earlier, Ghatampur's Inspector was also suspended.
Over 100 people had died in a similar tragedy in Saharanpur and Kushinagar districts from February 8 to February 12. Several others had lost their sight. UNI
