Agartala, Jun 4 : At a time when 151 fresh Covid positive cases puzzled Tripura administration, a group of patients ,undergoing treatment at Covid Care Centre at Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in the city, yesterday allegedly attacked the health workers demanding better care and food.
According to a report, over 200 Covid-19 infected patients have been undergoing treatment in the hostel when suddenly a group started complaining against the facilities and quality of food. They reportedly demanded non-veg food at night but the staff on duty explained their inability, which made them furious. The patients also allegedly accused the doctors despite being Covid negative in the test, they were kept in the hospital without proper food and facilities due to administrative difficulties. However, the health staff on duty had tried to convince them and after they failed, they called police at night. The agitated patients damaged doors and windows of the hostel and misbehaved with the female staff. Till early this morning agitation continued and later health officials assured to address their issues today and brought the situation under control.
The doctors’ organisations condemned the incident and urged the government to ensure the safety and respect of the health workers in all institutions. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, however, urged the patients to maintain peace and cooperate with the health staff. He said the government was doing its best to fight Coronavirus, but such unwanted incidents would not be tolerated. “The doctors and health staff have been serving the patients tirelessly without any hesitation round the clock and at least the patients must reciprocate their acts and pay respect to them,” Deb stated. Meanwhile, with the fresh cases of 151 last night, active Covid cases in Tripura rose to 400 without any death.
Tension sparked off after seven patients, including a child, got admitted to Agartala Government Medical College with other complications in the medicine ward, pediatric ward and the flu clinic was found Covid positive. The situation turned volatile after an administrative staff of the hospital was detected positive, as his assignment was to attend nonclinical issues of each and every department. With the infection in the staff-- doctors, paramedics, other staff and cleaning workers in the hospital became scared. The hospital authority has faced problems to run the service and critical care services like dialysis, respiratory treatment, surgery, neuro care and trauma care have been disrupted. Meanwhile, the doctors are blaming the government for making the medical college and the only super specialty hospital into Covid treatment centre despite opposition from all sections. (UNI)
