Agartala, Jan 29: A fortnight after the custodial death of an undertrial in West Agartala police station, a prisoner was found dead in Agartala Central Jail that raised questions of security of the inmates inside the jail and the administration of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who is also holding the jail portfolio.

In the last two years, several adverse incidents were reported in jails of Tripura, including fleeing of prisoners, custodial deaths and violation of human rights. However, the incident of suicide by hanging embarrassed the government and insisted the opposition parties to point finger at the government.

Expressing concern over the unnatural death of an undertrial prisoner in the Central Jail at Bishalgarh, the CPI(M) today demanded a high level inquiry into the incident.

Sanjib Sarkar, a truck driver and resident of Gourangatilla of Teliamura was arrested by police on December 26 in a drug peddling case and was in jail since then.

On January 27 evening, the jail authority informed that Sanjib Sarkar had committed suicide inside the jail. “Sanjib was not alone in the jail. How come an undertrial commit suicide in presence of other prisoners? Is it a suicide or murder? The government must order a high level inquiry to know the actual cause of death, CPI (M) questioned.

In a press release the party expressed deep concern over two custodial deaths – R K Pur police station and West Agartala police station and unnatural death of an inmate in jail and accused the government of failing to provide security of the undertrials.

Sanjib Sarkar was found hanging in cell number 2 inside the Central jail and the deceased's wife claimed that he cannot commit suicide and there is a conspiracy behind his death and demanded high level independent inquiry. (UNI)
