Agartala, Nov 11: Newly appointed Chief Justice in High Court of Tripura Justice Akil Abdulhamid Kureshi is scheduled to join here on Nov 16 next after Governor Ramesh Bais administered him the oath of office and secretary in a simple function.
The Ministry of Law and Justice on Nov 8 last had issued a formal notification appointing Justice Kureshi, the Judge of the Bombay High Court as the new Chief Justice of Tripura following statutory approval from the President of India. As per the notification of union ministry said that in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article-217 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice Kureshi as Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura and the appointment will effect from the date he assumes charge of his offices.
The 59 years old Justice Akil Kureshi had joined Gujarat High Court as justice in the year 2004 and served there till Nov 2 last year. Then he was posted as justice of Bombay High Court. From there he has been elevated as Chief Justice of Tripura. In May this year, the Collegium of Supreme Court had recommended him as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court but it was delayed turned down by the Central government.
In July this year, Gujarat High Court Advocates Association had filed a petition in Supreme Court in a delay of his posting. After some hearings the Government said to Collegium that his name is not suitable for Chief Justice of MP. On two communications by the government on Aug 23 and 27, the government said to rethink his name. On Sept 5 last again Collegium recommended his name to elevate as Chief Justice of Tripura High Court. (UNI)
