New Delhi, Oct 9: A day after AICC General Secretary Luizinho Faleiro was removed as In-Charge of Tripura unit, Congress party on Tuesday backtracked its decision and re-appointed him, on the post.
"In a partial modification of the press release issued yesterday, Congress president has appointed Gourav Gogoi MP as In-Charge of Sikkim and Manipur, along with his current responsibilities as In-Charge of West Bengal and A&N islands", said a statement issued by AICC General Secretary In-Charge KC Venugopal. "Luizinho Feleiro will continue as General Secretary In-Charge of Tripura and the rest of the North Eastern states", he added.
On Monday, the Congress had appointed Mr Gogoi as In-Charge of Tripura and Manipur, replacing Mr Faleiro. The replacement of Faleiro was significant, after a week of resignation of Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Deb Burman as PCC president, following discontent with the former.
Mr Burman had made serious objection to the functioning of the party and alleged that AICC never understood the sentiments of Northeast and political dynamics of region, which over the years, a serious harm had been caused to the party. He mentioned that Falerio and his predecessor Dr C P Joshi, hardly made any visit to the state and interacted with the local leaders. Instead, they preferred to remain confined in Delhi and run the politics with the aide and advise of non-congress people, including an incumbent MLA of BJP.
Congress could have done better if there was proper leadership even in 2013 assembly elections but unfortunately, AICC never felt to win the state that hurt the sentiment of the common people that also paved the way for BJP to come in power in last election, Mr Burman observed.
With the acceptance of resignation of Mr Burman, the AICC seems to have realised the reality and appointed a committed Congress leader of Northeast Gourav Gogoi as In-charge, but it left many challenges before him to run the party.
On the other hand, the Congress leadership in Tripura is clearly bifurcated after the departure of Mr Burman from the party. His resignation has also affected ruling BJP and its tribal partner IPFT at the ground level. Apart from that, his pro-tribal statement in several occasions over the last few months, has gained ground for unification of major tribal-based parties and leaders, including the CPI (M).
'We welcome Gourav Gogoi and hope the party will do better in the coming days,' a TPCC statement had earlier said. (UNI)
