Agartala, Sept 28: Police arrested two more accused last night from Nabagram area of Northern Agartala in connection with the gang rape of a woman on September 24 last while one sub-inspector of airport police station was suspended for his negligence in duty.
The total number of arrest in the gang rape case has risen to eight and one more suspected was brought for interrogation last night and three policemen have been suspended from service so far, police said here today. “The court has remanded all the accused in jail and asked the police to conduct test identification (TI) parade on September 30 to start next course of investigation. Since the victim mentioned two to three names of the accused persons along with the number of the perpetrators, now their identification by the victim is essential for proceeding further,” said a senior police officer adding that all other angles have also been explored by the investigating team.
According to police, based on local input police raided a house in Nabagram and picked up two youths and later another suspected was arrested from the same area and brought for interrogation. Police refused to divulge the identification of the accused arrested later and claimed it would affect the investigation. Meanwhile, West Tripura police administration has suspended SI Sanjan Majumdar of airport police station who was on duty in the particular beat where allegedly the lady was raped. Majumdar was responsible for managing the area and police naka was there on the road through which the accused took away the victim and returned.
Assistant sub-inspector Sita Rani Debbarma of West Agartala Women police station and ASI Shanti Tripura from A D Nagar police station had been suspended for negligence in duty two days ago allegedly because of their refusal to accept the FIR by the woman on that night. Earlier, police had arrested six persons based on the complaint of the victim who were identified as Pradip Das (26), Bishal Das (20), Priyamanish Roy (26), Ajoy Saha (20), Dipak Debnath (22) and Radhab Das (24). All are the residents of Northern part of Agartala.
The victim alleged that she was gang raped by a 10 –member group on September 24 night near Agartala airport where the road diverts from Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) area. She was pushed off from the vehicle in an unconscious state near the Circuit house at midnight. After gaining sense she called up her husband and relatives who rescued her.
The victim stated that she was returning from AGMC after consulting with a doctor of her daughter. But there was no vehicle on the roads since it was raining. She then called her auto rickshaw driver Pradip Das to take her back home. Pradip came to take her but while returning took a different road. Soon after two others Bishal and Ajoy boarded the auto and tied the victim's face with a cloth. Then she was taken to a jungle near the airport and gangraped by 10 persons repeatedly.(UNI)
