Agartala, Aug 24 : A fast-track court of West Tripura yesterday sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment of Kalayani Deb (52) with a fine of Rs 10,000 for burning to death in cold blood her newly married daughter-in-law Pujayita (Paul) Deb on March 4, 2014, at Dhaleshwar of Agartala.
Abhijit Deb, younger son of Kalayani had married Pujayita in August 3, 2013, against the wishes of his parents. She was later subject to torture for dowry. Investigation revealed despite Abhijit's efforts to stand by his wife and in-laws, his parents remained insistent on the payment of dowry which Pujayita's parents could not afford.
Abhijit's mother, sister and father had poured kerosene on Pujayita's body and burnt her alive. While trying to save his wife, Abhijit also sustained serious burns.
However, Abhijit's father and sister secured acquittal due to lack of direct corroborative evidence but Kalyani, who was the main culprit, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
