Agartala, Aug 5: The sub-divisional magistrate of Jampuijala under Sepahijala district , near Agartala convened peace meeting today to restore normalcy in the area. For over a week this area has been continued tensed due to clash between BJP and it’s partner in the government IPFT after appointment of BJP MLA from Golaghati Birendra Kishore Debbarma as Chairman of Block Advisory Committee (BAC). The IPFT has been demanding the post for last one year but the tension broke out when BJP grabbed the post.
The development of the villages were disrupted for the past few months, as a major part of the sub-division falls under ADC, which is ruling by the Left Front. The major part of the area has been under the control of IPFT but BJP did not want to allow them anymore. There was a series of violence in the past two weeks that made the entire subdivision cut off from other parts of the state. The normal life including healthcare service, ration supply and the emergency services like power supply was affected badly.
While BJP supporters have been accusing IPFT of perpetrating violence and attacking them, IPFT said the reverse adding that BJP stepped away from coalition principle and poaching to former party’s base. Trouble broke out on July 2 last where supporters of BJP and IPFT engaged in clashes over a program organized by the former. The supporters of both the parties began fighting over a trifling comment made by BJP supporters and three of them sustained injuries. The SDM (Jampuijala) Sanjit Debbarma had to impose prohibitory orders under section 144 which is still in force.
There was also an incident of arson in which an IPFT supporter Michael Debbarma (25) was arrested and is in police custody. The IPFT supporters launched a road blockade in Takarjala and Jampuijala to protest the arrest of Michael Debbarma and demand his unconditional release. Police personnel had a tough time tackling the situation and finally a BJP supporter Gandhi Debbarma (27) had to be arrested. But despite the forced withdrawal of the road blockade mounting tension has been reported from Takarjala and Jampuijala as the IPFT is adamant on removal of Birendra Debbarma from the post of BAC chairman and appointment of an IPFT leader to the post.
Police said Infighting between two allies of the newly formed government has been continuing for the past one year mostly for dominance in the tribal areas. While the IPFT workers have been agitating for their dominance and claim the post of Chairman in Block Advisory Committee of the rural blocks in few areas, BJP have not been ignoring their claims.
