Agartala, Jul 27 : The three tier-panchayat election to 833 seats of Village Panchayats, 82 of Panchayat Samity and 79 seats of Zilla Parisad began peacefully across 1848 polling stations of Tripura from early this morning amid allegations of threat and intimidations by the opposition parties.Around 9000 polling personnel and roughly over 12,000 security personnel, including a few companies of central paramilitary forces, have been deployed for conducting the elections.
All the polling parties have safely reached their destinations by last evening without any problem and polling started peacefully since 0700 hrs, state election commissioner G K Rao.He said polling was slow in the first two hours due to bad weather but no untoward incident was reported. All 1,848 polling booths were manned by 600 Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, 17 companies of Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force besides state police based on the vulnerability mapping.
The police have marked 676 booths as normal and 1172 as sensitive.
Out of the total 6646 seats of three-tier panchayats, the ruling BJP has won over 85 per cent,that is, 5652 seats unopposed. While BJP is contesting in all poll bound 833 seats of 6111 in village panchayat, Congress is fighting in 612, CPI (M) in 396 and BJP’s ally Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura is contesting 37 seats at the lowest tier of panchayat.In case of Panchayat Samity, ruling BJP won 337 of 419 seats without contest and in remaining 82 seats BJP is fighting in all while CPI (M) fielded 56, CPI one, Congress 60 and IPFT in two seats.
Similarly, in 116 seats of Zilla Parisad, ruling BJP won 37 seats unopposed and was fighting for remaining 79 seats. However, CPI (M) is contesting for 67 seats, Congress fielded candidates in 63 seats and IPFT in two seats. However, opposition CPI (M) and Congress alleged that their voters have been facing continuous threat from the ruling BJP supporters.
