A momentous occasion in our Parliamentary democracy.. For years, vested interested groups who believed in emotional blackmail never cared for people’s empowerment. J&K is now free from their shackles. A new dawn, better tomorrow awaits.

__Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India

************************************************************************

They changed the law and annexed Kashmir. The question is whether the Kashmiri people..will decide their struggle has ended. The struggle will become stronger and go to another level. When they crush (the Kashmiris), there could be a Pulwama-like incident, I predict it today. Then (India) will say terrorism came from Pakistan while everyone knows Pakistan had nothing to do with Pulwama…In the event of any Pulwama like incident, they will take action and we will respond…It can’t happen that if they attack Pakistan, we won’t respond to it. We will respond… There could be a conventional war…If we fight to the last drop what kind of war will it be? It will be a war no one can win. Everyone will lose, it will have implications for the world.

__Imran Khan, Prime Minister of Pakistan

************************************************************************

You say that it is an internal matter, but it is being monitored since 1948 by the UN, is that an internal matter? We signed the Simla Agreement and Lahore Declaration, was that an internal matter or bilateral?........I do not think you are thinking about PoK, you violated all rules and converted a state into a Union Territory overnight.

__Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Congress leader in Lok Sabha

************************************************************************

I want his (Adhir Rajan Chowdhury’s) clarification…..He said that Jammu and Kashmir is pending in the United Nations so how will we take this bill without UN’s permission? Please clarify what you want to say…..Kashmir is an integral part of India. Whenever I talk about J&K, PoK and Aksai Chin are included and we can die for it.

__Amit Shah, Union Home Minister

************************************************************************

How can Article 370 be modified using Article 370?...I know it was your manifesto promise…..But in repealing Article 370 you are unleashing forces which you cannot control. ….Momentarily you may think you have scored a victory…Drum beats on street may force you to think you have corrected a so called injustice. But history will prove you….Future generations will realize what a grave mistake this House is making today. This will be a catastrophic blunder.

__P. Chidambaram, Senior Congress leader

************************************************************************

Under Article 370(3), there is a provision that the President on recommendation of Parliament has the power to amend or cease the implementation of Article 370 through a public notification.

__Amit Shah, Home Minister

************************************************************************

A historical wrong has been undone today. Article 35(A) came through the back door without following the procedure under Article 368 of the Constitution of India. It had to go.

__Arun Jaitley, Senior BJP leader

************************************************************************

I had never imagined that the head of the state, which is India’s crown, will be chopped off. …. You have made light of the State of J&K.

__Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha

************************************************************************

I don’t think that there is anything revolutionary here. It’s a political decision, even though it is not a wise decision.

__Soli Sorabjee, former Attorney General

************************************************************************

Headless Congress has also become brainless. ….How can you say that Kashmir is not our integral part and it is not our internal issue?

__Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Union Minister of Minority Affairs

************************************************************************

National integration isn’t furthered by unilaterally tearing apart J&K, imprisoning elected representatives and violating our Constitution. This nation is made by its people not plots of land. Disabuse of executive power has grave implications for national security.

__Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader

************************************************************************

I support the move. …. Would’ve been better if constitutional process had been followed. No questions could have been raised then raised then. Nevertheless, this is in our country’s interest.

__Jyothiraditya Scindia, Congress leader

************************************************************************

I do not personally agree with the blanket condemnation of these developments. There are several positive points…..Ladakh’s emergence as Union Territory is to be welcomed. …The gender discrimination in Article 35(A) needed to be addressed, as also the long awaited enfranchisement of West Pakistan refugees and reservation for Scheduled Tribes will be welcomed.

__Dr. Karan Singh, erstwhile J&K royal and senior Congress leader

************************************************************************

There was a long pending demand to scrap Articles 370 (which gives special status to J&K) and 35(A) of the Constitution with the intention of ensuring socio, economic and political justice. The BSP now expects that the people of the region will benefit from the Centre’s decision.

__Mayawati, BSP chief

************************************************************************

I am not talking about the spirit of the Bill. My party is opposed to the procedural method followed by the Government. I will not support the Bill. You can talk to the people (of Kashmir). They have their opinion.

__Mamata Bannerjee, West Bengal CM

************************************************************************

We are closely following the events of Jammu and Kashmir. We take note of India’s announcement revising the constitutional status of J&K and India’s plan to split the state into two union territories.

__Morgan Ortagus, US State Department spokesperson

************************************************************************

The reorganization of states is not a unique incident in history of independent India and it was mainly aimed at reducing regional disparity. It is an internal matter as stipulated by the Indian Constitution.

__Ahmed Al Banna, UAE Ambassador to India

************************************************************************

We urge India to be cautious in its words and deeds on the border issue, strictly abide by the relevant agreements reached between the two sides, and avoid taking actions that further complicate the border issue….China has always opposed India’s inclusion of Chinese territory in India’s administrative jurisdiction in the Western part of the Sino-Indian border. This position is firm, consistent and has never changed. In recent days, the Indian side has continued to undermine China’s territorial sovereignty by unilaterally amending its domestic laws. This practice is unacceptable and will not produce any effect, said a statement in Mandarin published on Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website.

China is seriously concerned about the current situation in Kashmir. …This issue is a legacy of history between India and Pakistan, which is also the consensus of the international community. The parties concerned should exercise restraint and act with caution, especially to avoid actions that unilaterally the status quo and exacerbate the tension. We call on the two sides to peacefully resolve relevant disputes through dialogue and consultation and safe our regional peace and stability, said Chinese Foreign Ministry in a separate statement.

India does not comment on the internal affairs of other countries and similarly expects other countries to do likewise.

__Raveesh Kumar, Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs.

************************************************************************

I have spoken to Indian foreign minister (regarding Kashmir). We have expressed some of our concerns around the situation and called for calm.

__Dominic Raab, Britain’s Foreign Secretary

************************************************************************

Malaysia would like to encourage all stake holders to abide by the relevant SC resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir towards the maintenance of international peace and security. Malaysia is concerned over the recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir, in particular the repeated escalation of tension in the region. As a close partner to both India and Pakistan, Malaysia places high hopes that the two neighbors will exercise utmost restraint to prevent further escalation that could be detrimental to the peace, stability and prosperity in the region. Malaysia always believes that dialogues and consultations are the best routes to a peaceful and amicable solution over this long-standing dispute.

__A statement by the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Office.

************************************************************************

Moscow expects that India and Pakistan will not allow aggravation of the situation in the region due to the change by Delhi in the status of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. ….. We proceed from fact that the changes associated with the change in the status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and its division into two Union Territories are carried out within the framework of the Constitution of the Republic of India. We hope that the parties involved will not allow a new aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of the decisions. …We hope that the differences between them will be resolved by diplomatic means on a bilateral basis in accordance with the provisions of the Simla Agreement of 1972 and the Lahore Declaration of 1999.

__Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia
