DRI seizes 31.5 kgs of gold worth Rs 13.3 cr

Hyderabad, Feb 2: The officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Nellore seized 31.5 kgs of Gold, worth Rs 13.3 crore.

Based on specific intelligence, officers of the DRI, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Nellore units intercepted various passengers travelling in trains and bus and seized a total of 31.5 kgs of gold valued at Rs 13.3 crore. On midnight of January 31, the officers of DRI, Nellore unit intercepted three passengers travelling from Chennai to Warangal in Jaipur SF Express at Vijayawada Railway Station. It was noticed that they were carrying gold in packets concealed inside the bags.

On enquiry, the passengers admitted that they have carried cash to Chennai, purchased the smuggled gold at Chennai and travelling back to Warangal to hand over the same to mastermind at Warangal. They have further stated that the gold bars purchased by them were actually made out of smuggled foreign origin gold and they do not have any documents to prove licit import in to the country. The Gold is totally weighing 7228 grams and valued at Rs 3,05,77,824 in the local market.

The three passengers attempting to smuggle the gold have been arrested. In a similar manner, on February 1, about 0130 hrs, the officers of DRI, Vijayawada unit intercepted three passengers travelling from Chennai to Warangal in Train 12615- GT Express at Vijayawada Railway Station. It was noticed that they were carrying gold in packets concealed inside their clothing. On enquiry, the passengers admitted that they have carried cash to Chennai, purchased the smuggled gold in Chennai and were travelling back to Warangal to hand over the same to mastermind at Warangal.

They have further stated that the gold bars purchased by them were actually made out of smuggled foreign origin gold and they do not have any documents to prove licit import in to the country. The Gold is totally weighing 7077 grams and valued at Rs 2,99,38,375 in the local market. The three passengers attempting to smuggle the gold have been arrested. (UNI)
