New Delhi, Jun 6: Reacting sharply to the decision o f 12 Congress MLAs to join the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi in Telangana, the grand old party on Thursday stated that "it is a daylight murder of democracy".
Addressing mediapersons at AICC headquarters, party spokesperson Pawan Khera said that the way people's mandate and democratic norms are being butchered is kind of daylight murder of democracy.
"Because of somebody is in power, access to resources, thinks he can control agencies, does not mean that somebody has got unbridled powers and he should misuse those powers and kill democracy", Mr Khera said.
He further said that these MLAs were elected by the voters, who rejected the TRS, that voter voted for the Congress, India will never forget this kind of daylight murder of democracy.
As a huge setback to the Congress, 12 out of 18 MLAs on Thursday met speaker P Sreenivas Reddy and handed over a representation to merge the Congress Legislative Party into ruling TRS.
According to Representation of People's Act, two third of MLAs can form a separate block and the anti-defection law will not be applicable on them.
In the assembly elections held in December, the Congress faced a humiliating defeat with 19 MLAs against TRS's 88 in the 119 assembly.
However, party's state president Uttam Kumar Reddy resigned after he was elected from Nalgonda Lok Sabha seat. With the MLAs reduced to 18, if 12 of them crossover, the anti-defection law is not applicable.
Significantly, if the speaker accepts their representation, Congress will lose the opposition party status as its count will come down to six and Asaduddhin Owaisi-led AIMIM will get the position with seven MLAs.
In the recently held Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had won three seats in Telangana.
