Hyderabad, Jan 25 : Polling for the second phase of Panchayat election in Telangana, which began at 7 am, ended at 1300 hours on Friday, amid tight security.
The counting of votes will be taken up from 2 pm this afternoon. Though the notification was issued for 4,137 panchayats, the election was held for 3,342 panchayats as the candidates in 788 panchayats were declared elected unanimously and election to 7 panchayats was cancelled due to other reasons.
In all, 10,668 candidates are in fray for sarpanch posts in 3,342 panchayats in the second phase of election. Though the election was held without any involvement of political parties and party symbols, all major political parties have thrown their weight behind the sympathisers.
In the first phase of election to 4,480 panchayats held on January 21, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had bagged a majority of them. The third and final phase of election to 4,115 panchayats will be held on January 30.
