TN Govt cancels school board exams

June 09 2020The Tamil Government on Tuesday announced cancellation of board examinations for tenth standard school students in view of increasing cases of Covid in the State.Following in its footsteps Union Territory of Puducherry also cancelled school board examinations.The examinations were scheduled to be held between June 15 and 25.In a statement, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami said tenth standard examinations and re-examination for 11th for failed students stand cancelled.He said all students would be promoted and their performance would be assessed for the record. Eighty per cent of marks would be determined on the basis of grades got in quarterly and half yearly examinations and 20 per cent be on the basis of attendanceThe Chief Minister said the Government decided to cancel the public examinations asexperts had said the incidence of Covid cases would increase in the coming days. The government also bore in mind the suggestion made by the Madras High Court to cancel the examinations in view of the pandemic.The court on Monday castigated the government for holding the examinations and thereby risking the lives of nine lakh students.The court passed these structures while hearing a public litigation for cancellation of the examinations.The petition is expected to be disposed of when it comes up for hearing again on June 13 as the Government has yielded.The decision has been welcomed by parents and teachers as well as political parties as even DMK president and Leader of the Opposition MK Stalin had asked the government to promote all students as done by the Telangana Government.
