1,685 new cases in TN: Total 34,914: 21 more deaths, toll 307

Tamil Nadu , June 9, 2020 : The number of covid positive cases in Tamil Nadu touched a new peak of 34,914 following a record spike of 1,685 on Monday. With 21 more deaths, maximum so far, the fatalities touched 307, the health department said in a bulletin.

With 798 discharged on Monday, the total number of those cured reached 18,325, a recovery of over 52 per cent.

The press release said the number of positive cases till date was 16,279. Of these, 1,639 tested positive on Monday. Another 36 imported cases took the total to 1,685 and the overall tally to 34,194.

Of the imported cases, five were returnees from Dhamam, Kuwait ( both UAE) and Maldives. Another 31 were those from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab who came by air and road and by train.

Twenty-one died in the last 24 hours,15 in Government hospitals and six in private hospitals.The Government said two were cross-notified ( to other States) and one died after turning negative.

Giving a district-wise breakup, the bulletin said Chennai accounted for 244 deaths and Chengalpattu. Tiruvallur each and Kanchipuram five. The remaining 28 deaths were spread across the State.

Madurai, Vellore and Villupuram recorded three deaths each, Thiruvannamalai, Dindigul, Theni and Thoothukudi two each.

Cuddalore, Ranipet, Coimbatore, Erode,, Namakkal, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, and Tirunelveli are one each. Besides, one man under airport surveillance also succumbed.

Chennai accounted for 20 of the 21 new fatalities. One man died in Tiruvallur.

The oldest victim was 90 and the youngest 30, both men from Chennai. Two were women aged 74 and 64 and both were from Chennai.

The district-wises breakup of local and imported infections showed that Chennai and neighbourhood and southern districts reported a high number of new cases.

Chennai recorded 1,256 new cases( total 24, 535). Chengalpattu saw 162 new cases(2,146), Kanchipuram 32(567) and Tiruvallur 97(1,476).

Elsewhere in northern Tamil Nadu, Kallakurichi saw a spike of 204(295), Thiruvannamalai 167(522), Vellore 21(111) and Villupuram 14(385). Ranipet reported six more cases(139).

The southern region saw a very large number of infections. Madurai recorded 103 new cases(333). Dindigul added 32 cases(182).

Neighbouring Thoothukudi saw a spike of 178(365) and Tirunelveli 277(400). Tenkasi added 23 more cases(106). Theni saw a modest rise of 17 new cases(125).

Ramanathapuram saw 34 new cases(118) and Sivaganga 20( 42). Kanyakumari reported 19 more cases (95).

In the western region, Coimbatore reported 14 more cases(166) after a relative lull. Salem saw a massive jump of 123 cases(211).Namakkal had six more cases(85). Dharmapuri saw a fresh spurt of five new cases(19) and neighbouring Krishnagiri five more cases(37).

In the Cauvery delta region, Ariyalur added 16 more cases(384), Karur 14 more cases(87), Tiruchi four more cases(120) and Thanjavur 13(125). Nagapatinam had 12 new cases (88) and Tiruvarur 11(69).
