Kamal launches movement against Covid

S Murari

Chennai, June 07, 2020 : Actor politician and president of Makkal Needhi Maiyan Kamal Haasan on Friday launched a volunteer movement to combat Covid.Titled, Naame Theervu ( We are the solution), Kamal said it would begin in Chennai which has over 30,000 cases and over 200 deaths so far.

His band of volunteers will set up kiosks where face masks and hand sanitisers will be distributed.

He has enlisted 25 doctors as volunteers who will be available at a call centre to advise people.

By calling his movement "We are the solution," Kamal has said the Central and Tamil Nadu Governments have left the people to fend for themselves.

He has lampooned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying clanging food plates to salute health workers will not satisfy your hunger. He said that the Governments of Kerala, Karnataka and Odisha have done well in controlling the pandemic and attending to migrants and other poor hit by prolonged lockdown.

Responding to his criticism that the ill-planned lockdown has not contained the epidemic and it has only caused all-round distress, BJP's spokesperson for Tamil Nadu Narayanan Tirupathi has said Kamal has shown his ignorance by saying the lockdown was a failure.

Modi had clearly in mind the experience of the US and Italy where the hospitals were overwhelmed by the people in thousands getting coronavirus,he said.

The extended lockdown was only to give time to upgrade health infrastructure. Now they are in place and the restrictions are being undone in stages, he said.

India has done well compared to western countries, he added.Kamal' s view that this battle can be won only with people's cooperation is exactly the refrain of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami.

But Leader of the Opposition and DMK president M K Stalin has said the government has spurned all offers of cooperation from the opposition which also represents the people, unlike in Kerala and other States where all parties are united in the fight against Covid.
