Tamil Nadu, June 6, 2020 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami said on Saturday that the Government would bear the expenses on higher education of 13-year-old Nethra, daughter of a saloon owner in Madurai and a school student who has made her father spend Rs 5 lakh he saved for her education to feed the poor hit by the covid-induced lockdown.

In recognition of her concern for the poor, the UN Association for Development and Peace(UNADP) has named her its goodwill ambassador and announced a scholarship of Rs 1 lakh.

"As a Goodwill Ambassador, Nethra will be given the opportunity to speak at the United Nations NGO Conferences in New York and in Geneva, addressing Civil Society Forums and conferences", UNADAP said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded her in his Mann ki baat address.

Nethra’s father Mohan said his family spent in all Rs 8.5 lakh on feeding the poor during the crisis. He used the Rs 5 lakh he had kept apart for Nethra’s education and raised more money by pledging his wife’s jewels.
