TN covid cases cross 28,000. Toll 232


The number of Covid cases in Tamil Nadu touched 28,694 with a single day surge of 1,438 on Friday. With 12 more deaths, the toll reached 232, the health department said in an update.

Of the new cases, 33 were imported from other States and from abroad. Of these, six returned from Qatar, five from Dubai by air and one from Sri Lanka in a ship. Of the rest, Maharashtra accounted for seven cases, three of them who had flown in and four came in by train. Fourteen came from Delhi by train.

Till date, 821 were discharged and the total of those cured was 15,762, a recovery rate of nearly 60 per cent. The active cases as on date were 14,968.

Of the 232 total deaths, Chennai accounted for 178, Chengalpattu 14 and Tiruvallur 11. Other deaths were spread across the State.

All 12 new deaths occurred in Chennai. The youngest victim was a woman aged 44 and the oldest a man aged 82. Of the total, four were men and the rest men.

Of the cases, Chennai accounted for the maximum number of new cases. It accounted for 1,128 new cases and the total came to 19,826. Neighbouring Chengalpattu reported 90 new cases( total 1,624). Kanchipuram added 15 more cases to total 483.Tiruvallur recorded 70 new cases ( total 1,191).

Elsewhere in northern Tami Nadu,, Kallakurichi saw a spike of 194 cases to take its total to 264 from just 70. Thiruvannamalai saw a spike of 161 cases(493). Neighbouring Cuddalore 22 new cases to take its total to 474. Villupuram added 19 to its already formidable number of cases total 363. Vellore added six to take its tally to 53.

The maximum spurt was in southern Tamil Nadu with Madurai recording 96 new cases(291) and Thoothukudi 179 more cases(306). Tirunelveli saw a massive jump of 268 cases to take its total to 382 from 114. Virudhanagar added 98 cases( total 143). Dindigul added 28 more cases(151).

Elsewhere in southern Tamil Nadu, Theni had 17 new cases(`121), Sivaganga 21(34), Tenkasi 25(98) , Ramanathapuram 32( 93) and Kanyakumari 13(77).

In the Cauvery delta region, Tiruchi had 12 cases (112), Thanjavur 6 (104), Nagapattinam 8(71) Tiruvarur 8( 5), Karur 33(83), Ariyalur 12(374) and Perambalur three(143).

In western Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore had five new cases(15), Salem had 135 more cases(214),Namakkal six (85).

Those in airport surveillance were 155 and those in railways quarantined 357.
