Covid cases cross 25,000 in TN, Toll 208


With a single day spurt of 1,286 new covid cases in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the total touched 25,872. With 11 more deaths in the last 24 hours, the toll has touched 208, the health department said in a bulletin.

The press release said 1,244 positive cases were recorded. Another 42 cases were imported by returnees from abroad and other States. In the tally were 13 returnees from Dubai and two from other UAE countries. Besides, three from Gujarat and one Karnataka tested positive at airport.

In addition to these, 16 from Maharashtra, 5 from Delhi and 2 from Karnataka came by road, to add to the State’s load of cases.

Till date, 14,316 have been discharged. Active cases are 11, 345

Of the11 deaths, two were cross-notified to other States. And one more died after turning negative, the press release said.

Of the victims, the oldest was 80 and the youngest 47, both men from Chennai.

Chennai accounted for eight and Chengalpatu, Kanchipuram and Tiruchi one each.

Of the dead, two were women. One from Tiruchi aged 70 and another from Chennai aged 58. .

Overall, Chennai accounted for 158 deaths. Neigbouring Chengalpattu reported 13 deaths, TIruvalllur 11 and Kanchipuram 3.

Elsewhere in the State, Madurai 3 and Dindigul ,Theni and Thoothukudi adjoining Madurai 2 each. Thiruvannamalai and Tiruvavur in the Cauvery delta region recorded 2 deaths while Pudukottai had 1.

In northern Tamil Nadu, Villupuram recorded two deaths and adjoining Cuddalore and Vellore one each.

Coimbatore, Erode and Namakkal recorded one death each in the western region.

In southern Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari and Ramanathapuram reported one death each.

Of the total cases, Chennai had 17, 598, of which 8,405 are active.

The district break-up of active cases in alphabetical order: Ariyalur 11, Chengalpattu 685, Chennai 8,405, Coimbatore 15, Cuddalore 35, Dharmapuri 4, Dindigul 22, Erode 1, Kallakurichi 109, Kanchipuram 183, Kanyakumari 32, Karur 4, Krishnagiri 8, Madurai 96,Nagapatinam 13, Namakkal 5, Perambalur 3, Pudukottai 8, Ramanathapuram 35, Ranipet 20, Salem 153, Sivaganga 4, Tenkasi 21, Thanjavur 23, Theni 15, Tirupatthur 11, Tiruvallur 446, Thiruvannamalai 313,Tiruvarur 15, Thoothukudi 135, Tirunelveli 98, Tiruchi 16, Vellore 13, Villupuram 24 and Virudhanagar 38.

In addition, 93 are in airport quarantine, and railway quarantine 223.
