TN Govt to supply face masks in ration shops

Tamil Nadu, June 2, 2020 : The Tamil Nadu Government, which has distributed nearly 1.5 crore face masks to those living in densely populated areas and in containment zones, plans to supply more masks through ration shops as part of its preventive steps against Covid infection.

Reviewing the situation in Chennai and neighbouring Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur at Greater Chennai Corporation office on Tuesday, Chief Minister Edappadi Palani Swami said the high incidence of over 23,000 cases in Tamil Nadu was because it topped the list of States doing the maximum number of tests.

He said nearly 13,000 tests were done every day. The aim was to identity cases, isolate them and treat them at an early stage to avoid deaths. The other way to contain the disease was by making all people face masks.

Citing an example he said 1,500 who came by train and air from other States had tested positive. “ I do not comment about other States, but I want to assure the Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin that we have not scaled down the tests”.

He said 2.71 lakh PCR kits had been sent to 43 testing facilities in Government hospitals. So far, Tamil Nadu has got 12.56 PCR kits. Orders had been placed for 25 more lakh kits. There would be no let up in tests, as alleged by Stalin, he said.

Palanisami also said 4,500 beds been readied in Government and private hospitals to treat Covid cases. Tamil Nadu had 3,300 ventilators, the maximum in the country. As cases were diagnosed early, only five per cent needed ventilator support. Others were managed with oxygen cylinders.

He said the fatality rate was a mere 0.8 per cent, the lowest in India. This was because of early diagnosis and effective treatment.

Giving rough figures , he said over 23,000 had tested positive and 13,000 had returned home after treatment. In other words, the recovery rate was 56 percent. People need not panic over high numbers. As more and more tests were done, more and more cases would come to the surface. Otherwise, they would remain silent carriers.

Chennai and suburbs had a high number of cases because the population was 81 lakh and many live in congested areas. More face masks were being distributed among people in containment zones . The old and the pregnant were being shifted to institutional quarantine centres.
