TN:Covid cases reach new high of 1,149, total 22,333: Toll 173


New Covid cases touched a new high of 1,149 in Tamil Nadu on Sunday , taking the total to 22,333. With 13 more deaths, the toll reached 173, the health department said in a bulletin.

With 757 discharged after treatment, the total touched 12,747, nearly 60 percent of the total.

Chennai as usual accounted for the maximum number of new cases as well deaths.

Of the 13 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, four were men and three were women.

Two of the men were from Chennai aged 80 and 63.

The youngest was a 37-year-old man from Kanchipuram. The fourth man was aged 49 from Namakkal.

Of the three women who succumbed, two were from Chennai, aged 39 and 60. The third aged 70 was from Madurai .

Of the new cases, 1054 were local. Two were passengers who returned from the UAE and Myanmar. four from Delhi and Maharashtra who came by air, reported positive.

Another 87 were those who came by road from other States. Maharashtra accounted for 61 cases, Karnataka six, AP, Kerala and Odisha three each, Bihar, Gujarat and West Bengal two each and Puducherry, Delhi, Haryana , Jharkhand and Rajasthan one each.

As usual, Chennai and neighbouring Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur accounted for more than half of the total cases.

Chennai reported 809 cases in the last two days taking the total to 14, 802.

Chengalpattu recorded 89 new cases (total 1,177). Kanchipuram recorded 17 new cases (407). Tiruvallur saw a big jump of 53 new cases ( total 948).

In the rest of the State, the worst affected was Tirunelveli which saw a spurt of 246 new cases, taking its tally from 106 to 352.

Kallakurichi had 177 cases to take its total to 246.

Thoothukudi recorded 154 cases, taking its tally from 72 to 226.

The next worst affected was Thiruvannamalai with 182 new cases (total 419).

Salem, the home district of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami, added 128 to its tally to take the total from 48 to 176..

Virudhanagar saw a spurt of 90 new cases (123). Madurai added 97 cases to take its tally from 172 to 269. Ramanathapuram added 34 new cases (84). Kanyakumari recorded 15 new cases ( 67).

Cuddalore reported 20 new cases (461). Neighbouring Villupuram added another 12 cases (346).

The press release said 112 were in airport quarantine and 221 in railway quarantine.
