Agency News

Coimbatore, May 31 : A functionary of the opposition DMK and his personal assistant were arrested by the city police for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani and ruling AIADMK Legislator A Shanmugam.

Police sources said Coimbatore Rural Police late last night arrested DMK Coimbatore South District Secretary ‘Thendral’ Selvaraj and his personal assistant Keerthi Anand. Both of them were arrested on various charges, including resisting lawful apprehension, by the police in a case registered against them on May 28 for derogatory remarks about Mr Velumani and Shanmugam, representing Kinathukadavu in the State Assembly, and posting them on social media. Shanmugam, in his complaint, said Selvaraj had spread a slanderous campaign that Mr Velumani and he (Shanmugam) were abetting transport of sand, quarry products and liquor in trucks to Kerala via Veerappa Goundanur check post.

Investigations revealed that the social media posts were made from the mobile phone of Keerthi Anand, who was arrested near Valparai yesterday evening when the DMK workers were distributing COVID-19 relief items. When he was being taken to Kinathukadavu, about 50 people led by Selvaraj blocked the police vehicle near the Aliyar Forest Department check post and forcibly released Anand from custody after assaulting the policemen, threatening them and damaging the police vehicle.

Acting on a complaint from the Kinathukadavu police, the Aliyar police arrested Selvaraj and Anand under various provisions of the IPC and under the Tamil Nadu Property Prevention of Damage and Loss Act. They were produced before a Magistrate today and remanded in judicial custody. (UNI)
