Tamil Nadu, May 30, 2020 : A team of expert doctors have advised the Tamil Nadu Government to extend the lockdown for the fifth consecutive time from June1 by another two weeks in the worst affected districts of Chennai and neighbouring Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur.
The team has made this suggestion as covid infection is unabated with Chennai and its three neighbouring districts alone accounting for over 14,000 of the total of nearly 20,000 and 120 out of the 154 deaths so far.
Indian Council for Medical Research deputy director Pradeep Kaur, who is in the team told reporters in Chennai on Saturday that they were also against resuming bus and train services in these districts for now. They remain suspended till March 22.
The only way to contain the pandemic is by doing more tests, detecting more cases and isolating and treating the patients early, she said.
She said the people should follow government guidelines by wearing face masks while going out and maintaining social distance.
The fourth phase of lockdown is due to end on May 31 countrywide and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the nation at 11 a.m. on Sunday when he is expected to announce further relaxations along with extension till June 14.
Reports say he may advise strict lockdown in 60 cities which have a high incidence of cases and further relaxation of curbs in the rest of the country.
