Chennai, May 28, 2020 : The Southern Railways has announced that its headquarters in Chennai would remain shut on Thursday and Friday as some of its staff and officers had tested for Covid.
The railways said the offices would reopen on Monday after thoroughly disinfecting the premises.
The railways initially functioned with 33 per cent workforce and it was enhanced to 50 per cent during the current fourth phase of the lockdown.
The infection has spread despite railways taking all precautionary measures like the use of hand sanitisers and face masks.
The headquarters is opposite to the Rajiv Gandhi Medical College General Hospital in Chennai which along Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and the Stanley Medical College Hospital are major Covid referral centre
So widespread is the infection in Chennai, which now accounts for over 12,000 cases, that even the Puzhal Central prison is not spared. A prisoner who came out on parole contracted the disease and spread it in jail upon his return. The block where he was jailed has been disinfected and the prisoner has been admitted to hospital.
The Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market in Chennai ,which was closed early this month after it emerged as an epicenter, was disinfected by the corporation personnel on Thursday as traders, now functioning from Thirumazhisai in suburbs, told officials that they want to go back as sales are down.
