827 more cases in TN: Total 19, 372: Toll 145

Tamil Nadu, May 28, 2020 : Tamil Nadu on Thursday recorded a record high of 827 new Covid cases, taking the total 19,372. With 12 more deaths, the toll humped to 145, Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar told reporters in an update.

An exasperated the Minister said the ever increasing cases was because of lack of awareness among the people, especially those in Chennai .

Referring to their visit to containment zones in the city where the cases are going up by leaps and bounds, Vijayabaskar said: ”When we visited Pulianthope( one of the hot spots), people put on face masks only on seeing us. We are advising the people to wear masks for their own protection. Whom are they fooling by not doing it”, he asked .

He said that of the 827 new cases, 117 had come from Maharashtra( 74), Karnataka(21), Punjab(8), Haryana(2), Andhra Pradesh(2) Odisha(2) and Bihar(2). Besides one each from Delhi, Kerala, Telangana, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Till date 639 patients had been discharged and the total was 10, 548, which was nearly 50 per cent of the total cases. Besides, 8,676 were under active treatment

The Minister said of the 12 deaths recorded in the last two days, two were cross-notified to other States( that is added to their tally) and one patient died after turning negative. The total deaths were 145.

Barring one man from Thiruvannamalai, all others who had died of covid were from Chennai. The youngest was 36 and the oldest 78. The man who died in Thiruvannamalai was 44. The dead include two women, aged 60 and 75.

Chennai continued to lead in the number of cases with 559 on Thursday, taking its total to 12,762. Neighbouring Chengalpattu reported 45 new cases( total 933). Kanchipuram recorded 19 new cases plus one from Telangana(349). Tiruvallur reported 18 new cases( 863).

Thiruvannamalai saw a massive increase of 40 new cases, 16 of them local and 20 from Karnataka and another four from Maharashtra, taking its total to 304.

Salem, the home district of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy saw the cases jump from 68 to 107 in a single day. It had seven cases on its own and added 24 cases from Maharashtra, two each from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha , besides one each from Jharkhand and Rajasthan.

Cuddalore reported two new cases plus one each from Kerala and Maharashtra( total 443).Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu had three local cases and one from Gujarat.

Tirunelveli saw a massive jump of 29 new cases of which one was local. It had 24 cases from Maharashtra and four from Maharashtra, taking its total to 330.

Virudhanagar had two local cases and one imported from Maharashtra and the total reached 119,

In the rest of the State, Madurai recorded eight new cases (249), Villupuram three (342) and Vellore two(42). Neighbouring Ranipet recorded one case(97). Kallakurichi recorded three cases, all from Maharashtra and the total was 223,

In the Cauvery delta region, Nagapatinam recorded two new cases(54) and Thanjavur one(86), but Tiruchi had no new cases and its total remained at 79.3.

In Western Tamil Nadu, Krishnagiri reported one new case(26). Except for Salem, other districts in the region like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal and Tiruppur recorded no new cases.

The Minister said that 86 were in airport quarantine of which were domestic passengers. Likewise, 83 were in railway quarantine, including eight each from Punjab and Maharashtra.
