Tamil Nadu, May 24, 2020 : reported 765 new cases on Sunday, taking the total to 16,277. With eight more deaths recorded, the toll reached 111, the health department said in a bulletin.
It said that 718 tested positive on Sunday. In addition, 47 cases from other States and from abroad added to its tally, taking the total to 765. Of these, travellers from Maharashtra accounted for 39 new cases, West Bengal two, and Delhi, Kerala and Karnataka one each. In addition, one case each from Dubai, the Philippines and London added to the total in the State.
With 833 discharged on Sunday, the total number of Covid positive patients cured was 8,324. In other words, half of the total number of patients were cured of the virus. However, 839 were active cases under treatment.
Another disturbing trend was the increasing death rates. Seven men and one woman died in the last two days, taking the toll to 111. Six of these were from Chennai while one was from Chengalpattu and another from Tiruvallur, both neighbouring districts. They were in the 50 to 68 age group . A 60-year-old woman who died was also from Chennai.
As usual, Chennai reported the maximum number of new cases as well as deaths. It reported 587 out of the 765 new cases, taking its district tally to 10,576. Chengalpattu reported 46 new cases ( 779), Kanchipuram 21( 285), and Tiruvallur 34 (731).
Cuddalore had three new cases plus one from Maharashtra ( total 427). Kallakurichi had no new cases and yet took on 15 cases from Maharashtra taking its total to 136. Ariyalur recorded one new case (356).
The high number was because of massive infection from traders from Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai as was the case with Cuddalore.
Thanjavur had three new cases (83) and adjoining Tiruchi three new cases(75).
Thiruvannamalai in northern Tamil Nadu reported four new cases (188). Pudukottai recorded one case(20).
Madurai recorded six new cases(231).Adjoining Virudhanagar had no new cases but added 13 cases from Maharashtra(10) and West Bengal(3) to take its total to 98.
Adjoining Theni reported one new case plus one each from Delhi, West Bengal and Kerala (Total 196).
Tiruvavur in the Cauvery delta region recorded one new case plus one from West Bengal (37).
Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu had no new cases and yet got 11 cases from travellers from Maharashtra(160).
Kanyakumari reported two new cases (51). Ramanathapuram reported three new cases (58).
Several districts like Coimbatore, Erode. Salem and Erode reported no new cases but the existing number of those under treatment was quite high, giving the government little reason to rejoice.
