The Tamil Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday promulgated an ordinance to take over Veda Nilayam, the residence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalitha in the posh Poes Garden area in Chennai, and convert it into a memorial.
An official press release said a foundation, with Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami as chairman, Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam and Information Minister Kadambur Janarthanam as members would be set up to make “long-term arrangements” to convert Veda NIlayam as a memorial.
The Government will take possession of the ten grounds on which Vega Nilayam is situated and the foundation will take all steps for the safety, maintenance and upkeep all moveable assets like books, furniture, jewels etc. “as they are in a state of disuse for three years” after the death of Jayalalitha in December 2016 and her live-in aideV K Sasikala was convicted in a corruption case and lodged in a Bengaluru jail.
The press release said the Government decided to take possession of all moveable and immoveable assets until the acquisition process was completed.
