786 more cases in TN, total 14,753: Toll 98


The number of Covid cases in Tamil Nadu touched a record single-day spike of 794, taking the total to 14,753. With four more deaths, the toll touched 98, the health department said in a bulletin on Friday.

It said 694 patients were from Tamil Nadu. Another 91 were from other States and one was a returnee from the Philippines, taking the total to 786. Maharashtra accounted for 66, while 13 were from Delhi, six from West Bengal, two from Andhra Pradesh and one each from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana. The Filipino is in quarantine in Chennai airport.

Of the four who died in the last two days were all men in the 51 to 81 age group, Two of them died in Chennai, one in Theni and another in Chengalpattu.

As usual, Chennai accounted for 569 out of the total 786 cases taking its tally to 9,364 which was nearly 60 per cent of the total.

Chengalpattu reported 40 new cases( total 695), Kanchipuram 13( total 249) and Tiruvalluvar 39 new cases( total 675).

Among the other districts, Madurai reported 33 cases, 32 of them from Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, taking its total to 224.

Ramanathapuram reported seven new cases plus six of them from Maharashtra taking the total to 52.

Theni recorded four new cases plus one from Telangana taking the total to 101.

Further south, Thoothukudi had six cases plus three from Maharashtra, totaling 144.

Virudhanagar had no new cases and yet it's tally jumped by 26 to total 95 thanks to infection from those from Maharashtra and Delhi.

Vellore had two new cases plus another from Maharashtra, taking the total to 38.

Dindigul had no new cases, but added one more to its tally thanks to infection by a man from Maharashtra.

Pudukottai recorded two more cases plus one from Maharashtra( total 18).

Elsewhere, Thiruvannamalai reported two cases ( total 173) and Ranipet one(89).

Likewise, Erode reported one case(71), Kallakurichi one(121) and Krishnagiri one(22).

So far 7,128 patients have been discharged and another 7,524 are under treatment.
