Agency News

Karur, May 20 : The district police have registered a case against DMK Aravakurichi MLA and former Transport Minister V.Senthil Balaji for allegedly threatening Karur District Collector T.Anbalagan. Mr Balaji, who is the DMK incharge for Karur district, while talking to the media on May 14, accused the Collector of functioning in favour of the ruling AIADMK, after meeting him to submit memorandums received from the residents of his assembly constituency for redressal.

He said the Collector responded in an irresponsible manner when he asked him why the elected representatives from the Opposition parties were not invited for a review meeting held at the Collector office. If the Collector does not invite the elected representatives of opposition parties for such meetings, then we will stage protest against him and he will not be able to move freely in the district, the legislator said. Based on a complaint from the Collector, the Thanthonimalai police on Tuesday registered a case under Sections 143, 270, 153, 294 (b), 353 and 506 (ii) of the IPC.

Mr.Balaji was elected on AIADMK ticket in 2016 state assembly election, but, however he was disqualified along with 18 other MLAs by the Assembly Speaker P.Dhanapal in 2017 for switching loyalty to the faction led by V.K.Sasikala, a close aide of late Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa. Though he remained close to AMMK leader T.T.V.Dhinakaran after his disqualification, Mr.Balaji joined the DMK in 2018 and was made DMK's district secretary in-charge of Karur. He was fielded as DMK candidate for the Aravakurichi assembly by-election in 2019 and won by defeating the AIADMK candidate V.V.Senthilnathan. (UNI)
